Issac La Rue Johnson weiter geleitet.
1876. |

Chartered November 8, 1876 Arminius Lodge #25, rich in history, is since 1876 the only German speaking lodge in the District of Columbia. The history of Arminius Lodge #25 can be traced to the year 1876. In Washington, D. C. some Master Masons of German descent desired to form a new lodge where the rituals would be given in the German language. A formal petition was prepared and presented to then Grand Master Isaac LaRue Johnson. This petition was dated May 29, 1876 and was signed by 16 Master Masons. At first the Grand Master was unwilling to grant the request for the formation of such a lodge. Later, however, after the original petition obtained a recommendation signed by 68 members of the Grand Lodge and also another from Washington Centennial Lodge #14, the Grand Master granted a dispensation dated July 10, 1876, to test the ability of the brethren and to demonstrate the practicability of a new lodge using the District of Columbia rituals in the German language. Under this dispensation the brethren proved their ability to conduct and to confer in their native language the degrees according to the rules, rituals and customs of the jurisdiction of the District of Columbia. They petitioned the Grand Lodge and a charter was issued dated November 8, 1876. The charter designated brother Herman H. Gerdes as Worshipful Master, Brother John Hesse as Senior Warden and Brother Hugo Eichholz as Junior Warden. The new Lodge was constituted and consecrated in ample form on November 27, 1876. The first noteworthy event took place in February 1877, an official visit from our Sister Lodge in Baltimore, Maryland, Germania Lodge #160. In April the same year our Lodge returned the visit and this custom is still alive today. During the first year the Lodge held two communications per month. The number of petitions was so great that special communications had to be called. From the beginning our Lodge supported the widows and orphans. In 1879 an outing was held at the German Orphan Home on St. John's Day in order to support that organization. In January 1880 the first official installation of officers was held in the Commandery Room of the Masonic Temple. This event was repeated in 1891 (in June of 1881 a sudden thunder caused the roof of the Lodge room to be blown off and regular communications were not held for some time). In 1883 the Lodge made a collection for the flood victims in Germany. This gift was gratefully received and Brother Baron Otto von Cornberg of the Leopold Lodge Zur Treue #151 in Karlsruhe sent a letter of thanks. Brother Lansdsburgh presented the Lodge with a beautiful altar bible printed in German in 1889. Although this was more than 100 years ago, this bible is still being used on our Lodge altar. In the early 1900's many members were in financial stress. The Lodge took the necessary steps to enable them to pay their dues. The Lodge was in a comfortable position with a membership of 180 Brethren on its roll in 1900. The high point of our membership was reached in the 1920's with 225 members in good standing. In 1926 we celebrated our 50th Anniversary, and the 75th in 1951. There was a decline in membership in the 1960's with a roll of 145 in good standing. A significant tradition has been practiced for the last 50 years. Every first Sunday following Easter is dedicated for a family church service in Baltimore with our sister Lodge Germania #160 of Baltimore, Maryland. The intervening years have been enriched with Masonic work. Our 100 year anniversary and the 110th year anniversary were celebrated and we look back and ask: Where did the time go ? Because of the declining emigration to the United States and the age of the members retiring out of this jurisdiction, the membership stands at about 50. A small group of dedicated Master Masons continue the traditions of their forefathers. Members of our Lodge have served and continue to serve on the staff of the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia. We are honored in having several past Grand Masters of the District of Columbia as our members. Additionally, the Brethren are still active in visiting other German Lodges and hold regular communications once a month at the Takoma Lodge Hall. In 2001 we celebrated our 125th anniversary and were so honored by the Grand Lodge of Washington, DC. We are proud and happy that we were entrusted in 1876 with the duty and
privilege of conducting our Masonic work in our native language. The important thing is to look at our assets, our history, and our
accomplishments. We must see that this historic organization can fulfill its mission in a changing world. |
