Virginia | The Grand Provost, an appointed, non-progressive officer in the Grand Lodge, is the head of Masonic education activities. He is chairman of the Masonic Education Committee. As of July 2000, he is Thomas Blizzard. Each member of the Masonic Education Committee (there are about a dozen) is called an Area Provost, in charge of Masonic education activities in a different part of Virginia. There are also about 50 Districts, and each has a District Education Officer (DEO), and each lodge is supposed to have a Lodge Education Officers (LEO). All these officers are involved in Masonic education.Starting in 1999, the Grand Master instituted an “alternative” system of candidate progress. Instead of memorizing a long catechism, lodges could advance candidates if they learned a detailed Masonic education program, based on questions and answers in 3 booklets (EA, FC, MM), which are not to be given to candidates but instead discussed in detail with them, so they learn all about Freemasonry in a progressive way. |
